PRS (Paul Reed Smith) launches the Guitarbud, the guitarist’s interface for the iPhone. This accessory allows you to plug your guitar directly into your iPhone and iPod touch 2G for use with all guitar applications. There is also a jack for you to connect your headphones.

The Guitarbud basically replaces your iPhone’s built in mic with the direct output of your guitar, meaning you can use your guitar with any app that your mic worked. This 6 foot special instrument cable also be used with bass or keyboard and it works with the company’s PRS Jam Amp, Voice Memos, StompVox and many other apps.

Jam With Your iPhone – PRS GuitarBud

by ROB TILLOTSON on MARCH 4, 2010 ·

The iPhone platform has quite a few apps for musicians, but what about the instrument itself? Now you can connect your electric guitar directly to your iPhone or iPod Touch (2nd gen or later) with the GuitarBudfrom PRS. It plugs into the iPhone’s audio jack and has connections for headphonesand a guitar. To go along with the GuitarBud, PRS also has their own iPhone app, PRS JamAmp, which is an amp simulator and practice aid, but you can use the GuitarBud with any app that supports microphone input. The GuitarBud sells for about $30 at online music retailers; the JamAmp app is $9.99 in the app store.

SlashGear.com has unearthed a cable that musicians will probably be very excited to hear about called the Guitarbud, that lets you plug a guitar directly into your iPhone, as well as providing a headphone jack so that you can listen to your noodlings in private (sometimes that’s the best way!). The Guitarbud is made by Paul Reed Smith (PRS), and you can learn more about it on their website. The specially adapted cable was designed for guitarists by Bond Music Research, makers of PRS’ Signature Series Guitar cables used by leading guitarists. The cable is six-feet long, but lightweight at the same time so that you can put it in your pocket. The emphasis is firmly on portability and being able to record your riffs anywhere you happen to be, even using just the iPhone Voice Memo app, although PRS says that the cable will work with any app that is compatible with the iPhone mic. They also recommend more specific musicians’ apps that can be used with the Guitarbud, such as their own PRS Jam Amp, Riff Raters and GigDaddy Multitrack Mixer.

Plug your guitar directly into your iPhone

Does recording music get any easier than this? GuitarBud is a connecter that plugs your axe right into your phone, allowing you to record straight to any number of apps. Heck, you can just use the built-in voice recorder to lay down a melody you’ve got in your head. Or you can go a little more pro and turn your phone into a portable studio.

Sure, you probably won’t want to record an entire album on this thing, but you’ve gotta admit that it’s pretty awesome this ability now exists.

    The Guitar BUZZ…
PRS JAM AMP is a “MUST-HAVE” iPhone-iTouch APP

    http://theguitarbuzz.com/software/prs-jam-amp-iphone-itouch-app/

I was roaming the isles at NAMM and came across a demonstration for what quickly became a must-have electric guitar application for my iTouch.

The PRS JAM AMP combines a great-sounding guitar amp simulator, a backing track audio file player and a super-accurate tuner into an all-around first class application that allows me to jam along to backing tracks and slow down riffs and solos for optimal practice — all through my mobile device and the privacy of my headphones.

The PRS JAM AMP lets you load, loop and slow down audio clips for repeated practice of those tricky parts. Upload and play back popular riffs and songs in MP3, ACC (unprotected) or AIIF formats using the onboard web interface.

You can even adjust the tuning of your audio tracks to your guitar. For example, if the backing track was recorded in the key of C#… you can adjust the pitch upward by three tones and play along on your guitar in E!

The amp application includes the standard tone controls as well as input boost, reverb and crunch (overdrive). There is even a slider to adjust for room size.

As far as I am concerned, this is the ultimate iPhone-iTouch application. I can walk around in my house with my Les Paul strapped on and my iTouch in my pocket. The optional (but required)Guitarbud cable that connects my iTouch to my Guitar and headphones is neatly tucked in my back pocket and I am jamming along (walking room-to-room) to a backing track — all the while listening to everything through my headphones.

The best part is…. I am playing LOUD… and my wife hears nothing!

Whether you’re practicing, recording your latest idea, or just killing time, true inspiration and killer tone is finally as close as your iPhone or iTouch.

Turning Off the iPhone’s phone for uninterrupted App usage.

To avoid interruption while using PRS Jam Amp, you can turn on Airplane mode in iPhone Settings (this will ensure that you are not interrupted during use but will not allow you to receive or place phone calls). If you are on a WIFI network you can use airplane mode to turn off the phone and then enable Wifi to be able to use web and PRS Jam Amp track uploading functionality without call interruption.

If you don’t turn on Airplane mode and receive a call while using , PRS Jam Amp will automatically pause. After the call ends you will be back brought back to the tracks screen if you were playing a track.

If you do turn on Airplane mode while using PRS Jam Amp make sure to turn it off when you are done to resume full phone functionality.

    Input Level Issues

There is no input level control on the iPhone. The current Apple developer SDK does not let the app control the input level. To get a lower level, you either have to reduce the volume of the thing you are recording,  i.e. turn down the volume control on your guitar.

Getting the “right” sound can be a bit complicated as the iPhone has an automatic gain control circuit, and we have observed differences between the various models iPhones and iPod Touch’s. You should adjust the volume control of your guitar and the Live Input volume (Amp Volume) in Jam Amp before you play with the input boost or crunch effects.

We are working to improve PRS Jam Amp with preset’s in a future release to simply this. Please use the support form on the PRS Jam Amp Support page to tell us about your experiences with specific guitars and setting so that we can use this information in future updates.

Here is some more information we have found regarding the iPhone input that we will be addressing in future versions of Jam Amp – The iPhone 3G rolls off the  input signals below 100 Hz.

The Premier Gear Award is an honor bestowed upon a piece of gear—whether guitar, amp, effect, or other gear— that has been extraordinary enough to impress the staff of Premier Guitar. Despite the high quality of all gear reviewed by Premier Guitar, only exemplary items earn the award.

“The Tonare Grand is absolutely everything you’d want in a guitar this price range, even significantly higher,” says reviewer Gayla Drake Paul. “It makes everything easier. It makes you a better player because it lets you play better.” Premier Guitar awarded the Tonare Grand a rating of 5.0, the highest possible rating. The full review, as published in the December 2009 issue, can be accessed digitally at:http://www.premierguitar.com/Magazine/Issue/2009/Dec/PRS (click December issue at top right)
